The S-Band Central unit (SBCU) is a rugged system used in airborne radar. It has a hybrid backplane which supports RF as well as high speed digital boards. External world signals which interface with Shop Replaceable Unit (SRU)/modules terminate on blind mate connectors which ensure that individual cards are easily replaceable and hence the system maintainability is improved.

 
The RF module consist of dual stage up-converter to generate the RF pulses in the range 3.1 to 3.5 GHz and 6 channel receiver for down-converting the received RF pulses to IF. The digital module consist of PowerPC processor (MPC8640) board, Digital Receiver for down converting the IF to baseband and IO timing card for generating the timing control signal for pulse transmissions. The system is forced air conduction cooled and MIL-STD-461E complaint for EMI/EMC.

 

The SBCU is used in AEWACS radar.
